Changing Your Steel Guitar's Strings

Attach the ball end of the string to the control finger. Most steel guitars use one of the two methods shown.

The slotted fingers shown on the left (crow's foot type)
are used on MSA, MCI, EMCI, Carter, new Mullen, and new Zumsteel as well as others.

The pinned fingers shown on the right (pin type) are used on Emmons, most Sho-Bud, older Mullen, and older Zumsteel as well as others.

You may find it useful to wedge a small piece of foam against the pin when you attach a new string to the pin type finger. This will help prevent the ball from slipping off the pin while you are winding it to pitch.
