Steel Guitar Lubrication Techniques

Most steels should be lubricated at least every 6 months. If you are playing 4 to 5 nights a week, it should be lubricated even more often.

Lubricating a pedal steel guitar is a relatively easy process. Many lubricants come in small containers that can reach into most places on a steel guitar. All parts that move and/or have metal-to-metal contact, including rollers and pedals on the pedal shaft, should be lubricated.

Lubricate the following parts or areas with the recommended lubricants:

  1. Rollers
  2. Changer mechanisms
  3. Pedals
  4. Cross-shafts
  5. Pull fingers
  6. Pull pins or barrel nuts
  7. Between the stop bars and lower fingers

To get oil to the places that seem inaccessible (like between the raise and lower fingers) use a rod. Dip the rod in the oil and direct it to the desired area. You can also gently pour the oil down the rod directing it towards the desired area.

Tip: Try not to use spray products. These are hard to control and will get lubricants in places where it should not be!
